Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) intends to pioneer new programmes and pedagogies, starting with the latest model and the best practices in medical education. The LKCMedicine’s educational model with its focus on inter-disciplinary learning, will draw on synergies from the fields of medicine, science, engineering, technology, humanities and business management.
Digital education has already been available to NTU’s medical students before the pandemic. Technologies such as 3D printing and scanning were used as supplementary tools in teaching. The pandemic, as an accelerator, has largely extended technology’s role in teaching and learning.
NTU, for the moment, with the financial support from Singapore’s government, is cooperating with other AI platforms to use AI and machine learning to track students’ performance and establish a platform to deliver virtual lessons.
The innovative ways of teaching at LKCMedicine generally include team-based learning (TBL), use of eLearning, and use of stimulation. TBL, unlike problem-based learning, is a highly structured method in which every activity is carefully planned with an elaborate schedule. Students receive immediate and explicit feedback at every stage of learning, either individually or in a team. eLearning tools are prevalent in LKCMedicine and all students are equipped with an iPad. The learning materials including voice-over slides, course learning outcomes and timetables are all available online. To better polish students’ clinical skills, LKCMedicine employs stimulated patients and stimulation. Hybrid stimulation is devised to improve and integrate students’ skills in communication, technical operation, ensuring patient safety, professionalism and many other aspects.
