(The official commencement of the International Seminar & Collaborative Digital Literacy Workshop)

At the end of July 2024, the Indonesia Cyber Education Institute (ICE Institute) organized an International Seminar and Collaborative Workshop focusing on the future of learning with Generative AI (GenAI) in higher education. The event, held from July 28 to 30, brought together various groups, including educators, policymakers, industry leaders, academic researchers, and students from around the world, all eager to explore how this cutting-edge technology can shape the future of education.

The seminar aimed to achieve several key objectives. Foremost, it sought to create a collaborative platform to discuss and develop innovative applications of GenAI in higher education. The event provided space for participants to delve into the transformative potential of GenAI, addressing both the opportunities it offers and the challenges it faces. Another important goal was to enhance collaboration between educational institutions at both the regional Asia-Pacific and global levels. Furthermore, the seminar aimed to identify and tackle technological challenges related to the adoption of GenAI, ensuring the smooth integration of this technology into educational settings.

With more than 200 participants, the seminar highlighted the importance of international collaboration in the education sector. Organized by the ICE Institute and Universitas Terbuka, and supported by Universitas Gadjah Mada, and sponsored by leading institutions such as the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Tsinghua University, XuetangX, edX, and PCMan, the event was a testament to the global commitment to advancing education through technology.

The seminar began with an opening session led by Prof. Dr. rer.nat. Abdul Haris, M.Sc., Director General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology at the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia. He emphasized the importance of collaborative dialogue and the development of digital literacy skills. Mr. Jiro Tominaga, ADB Indonesia Country Director, followed with a speech highlighting the transformative potential of GenAI in education and support from the Japanese government.

Following the opening remarks, Prof. Ainun Na’im, Ph.D., Chairperson of the Governing Board of Universitas Terbuka, welcomed the participants and emphasized the importance of digital literacy and inter-institutional collaboration. The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Dr. Ir. Sri Suning Kusumawardani, ST, MT, Director of Learning and Student Welfare at the Ministry of Education and Culture. She provided a comprehensive view of how AI is transforming higher education, discussing the benefits, challenges, and the need for ethical guidelines in AI development.

Session 1: Online Learning – Moving Forward in the AI Era

The seminar featured several engaging sessions. In Session 1, Dr. Ir. Hatma Suryatmojo, S.Hut., M.Si., IPU, Director of Academic Innovation at UGM, discussed global collaboration in education and the integration of AI in online learning. Prof. Dr. Eng. Wisnu Jatmiko, S.T., M.Kom from the University of Indonesia, explored the evolution of AI, its applications in education, and ethical considerations of generative AI. Vishal Potluri from the Asian Development Bank presented the macroeconomic impact of AI and the TIES-C project, which aims to bridge the digital divide.

Session 2: Online Learning in AI Era – Universities and Government Initiatives

Session 2 focused on university and government initiatives in online learning. Min Seon Park, Program Specialist at NILE, shared insights on K-MOOC, a lifelong learning platform in South Korea. Dr. Nur Afny Catur Andryani from Binus University emphasized the importance of integrating AI into the educational system and developing AI-based educational products.

Session 3: What’s Next for Online Learning Providers

Session 3 discussed the use of generative AI in higher education. Prof. Dr. Ir. Khairil Anwar Notodiputro from IPB presented case studies on GenAI applications in curriculum design and student assessment. Dr. Asep Saefullah from the Indonesian University of Education explained the role of AI in evaluating and measuring student academic achievements. Prof. Qian Jing from Tsinghua University showcased innovative projects utilizing GenAI to enhance educational quality.


   

Parallel Track Sessions Organized by edX, XuetangX, and PCMan

Besides the main sessions, the event also held parallel track sessions organized by edX, XuetangX, and PCMan. These sessions were attended by experts in their respective fields, who delved deeper into the implementation of GenAI in higher education.

The final session, Session 4, addressed ethical and regulatory aspects of AI in education. Prof. Dr. Anis Hidayah from the University of Indonesia highlighted the need for ethical considerations and regulations to protect privacy and academic integrity. Dr. Suparno from Universitas Gadjah Mada discussed the policies and regulations required to support responsible AI use.

In conclusion, the seminar produced several key recommendations: enhancing inter-institutional collaboration, developing clear ethical policies, providing training for educators and students, encouraging further research, and improving technological infrastructure in educational institutions. The event successfully created a platform for sharing knowledge and experiences about the potential and challenges of GenAI in higher education. With ongoing support from the government, academia, and industry, it is hoped that generative AI can be used responsibly and effectively to enhance the quality of higher education in Indonesia and the Asia-Pacific region.
